Lord Menuhin believed that their should be an uninterrupted link between great composers, teachers and musicians. This he believed would ensure the passage of the European musical heritage from one generation to the next. His contribution to this legacy was the creation of the International Menuhin Music Academy 35 years ago.

The International Menuhin Music Academy (IMMA) is a non-profit Swiss foundation, established in 1977 in Gstaad, in the canton of Bern. Its principal aim is to develop the talent of gifted string instrumentalists from all over the world. The Academy offers them the opportunity to broaden their musical education through individual lessons, chamber music courses and concerts with the Menuhin Academy Orchestra, while also ensuring their preparation for prestigious international competitions. The teachers who inspired or taught at the Academy, from Pablo Casals to Benjamin Britten, from Nadia Boulanger to Gaspar Cassado, are all connected to the great composers and teachers of the 19th century: Brahms, Bartok, Enescu, Toscanini…

This tradition continues to this day.

Maestro Alberto Lysy, co-founder of the Academy, was the Academy’s Musical Director from its creation until 2008. Since 2011, Maestro Maxim Vengerov has taken over the position, bringing his talent, enthusiasm and inspirational leadership to the Academy.

Several years after being founded in Gstaad, premises were made available until 2011 by Nestlé SA in Blonay, near Montreux. Since then, Coppet (near Geneva) is now the music centre. Throughout the year, lessons, master classes and rehearsals take place at the Villa of the prestigious Château de Coppet.
